Good short-term memory is one of the prerequisites to successful interpreting in general, and consecutive mode in particular. This practical, engaging, and hands-on workshop will help participants better understand how short-term memory works. The presenter will demonstrate ways to improve short-term memory.

The course focuses on how simultaneous interpreting in healthcare settings is different than in other settings (conference, legal, educational) and requires different approaches to being successful. Healthcare interpreters may be expected to simultaneously interpret disfluent speech of a psychotic patient, or instructions of a trauma ER team, or an educational session for diabetic patients. Unlike in other settings, healthcare interpreters may need "just to repeat the words" in some cases rather than interpret the speaker's intended meaning.

The interpreter faces not only linguistic challenges but also those related to managing the encounter and their role as a care team member. Participants will have some practice of simultaneous interpreting and be offered specific tips on how to develop and improve their subskills needed to interpret simultaneously.

Instructors' bios:

Maria Carla Faccini has been certified as a CHI™-Spanish interpreter by the CCHI. She has an MA in conference interpreting (Spanish-English-French) from the Middlebury Institute of International Studies at Monterey and a bachelor's degree in education from the Universidad del Zulia in Maracaibo, Venezuela. She works as a medical interpreter/translator at Stanford Health Care and is also a freelance interpreter. She has 12 years of experience interpreting in medical settings in New York and California. She has been training medical interpreters since 2003.

Dr. Adrienne D. Mishkin is a board-certified psychiatrist with a specialization in psychosomatic medicine. She has a master's degree in public health from the Tulane University School of Medicine, where she completed her medical training. After receiving her degree from Tulane, she completed psychiatric training at St. Luke's-Roosevelt Hospital Center, followed by a psychosomatic fellowship at Montefiore Hospital. She is currently the psychiatric liaison to the blood and marrow transplantation program at Columbia University Medical Center/New York Presbyterian Hospital. She is also enrolled in a bioethics master's degree program at Yeshiva University.

Mara Youdelman, J.D., CCHI's first Chair and Managing Attorney at the National Health Law Program, discusses opportunities and challenges related to language access that face us over the coming year. Healthcare issues are front-and-center in the looming Presidential campaign cycle and Congressional debates to increase access to health care. This should provide new opportunities to advance language access. Yet, with anti-immigrant sentiment on the rise, we must also fight to protect the rights of limited English proficient individuals. How can interpreters and advocates engage in national and state conversations around improving healthcare access while fighting back against proposals that create fear in communities about accessing health care? Sight translation in healthcare settings often occupies an underprivileged position among the interpreter's skills. The frequency of this mode's application varies depending on the institutional policy and often on the interpreter's own preference to encourage "converting" it to the consecutive interpreting mode when, instead, a provider explains or summarizes a document. Yet, this skill can be argued to be the most difficult one to master as it requires a balance of interpreting and translation skills, with an added challenge of the variety and complexity of healthcare documents themselves.

This course focuses on identifying elements of equivalency constituting accurate sight translation of a healthcare document and corresponding interpreting sub-skills needed to master this mode.
